CERVICAL ATYPIA IN SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS Dr Chan Yee Ki, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Prince of Wales Hospital December 2003 Rheumatology Exit Assessment Exercise ; Objective To assess the prevalence of premalignant cervical lesion in systemic lupus erythematosus SLE ; and to determine if SLE itself, the different disease manifestations or the use of immunosuppressive agents were the risk factors. The prevalence of human papilloma virus HPV ; infection were also studied. Patients & Methods Ninety SLE patients participated in this cross sectional study. A structured questionnaire was administered to the subjects at the time of the Pap smear to ascertain the possible risk factors associated with cervical atypia. Demographic, clinical data and drug history were retrieved by systematic review of the charts. Data from 2, 080 healthy female subjects with Pap smears done at the same centre were retrieved for comparison. A cervical sample was collected with Cervex brush Rovers Medical Devices ; from each woman for routine cytologic examination. Results The mean age in SLE was 41 years old while control was 44 years old. The prevalence of abnormal Pap smear in SLE and control were 21% and 5.7% respectively p 0.000 ; . Cervical atypia was more commonly seen in SLE compared with control. High grade squamous intraepithelial lesion HGSIL ; was increased up to 9 fold in SLE as compared with control while only 1.5 fold increase in atypical squamous cell of undetermined significance ASCUS ; lesion was noted. The prevalence of HPV infection was also statistically higher in SLE 16.6% as compared with control 7.3% p 0.000 ; . SLE, history of sexually transmitted disease, sexual partner 4 or more and onset of sexual activity 17 years old or less were the independent risk factors for cervical atypia by logistic regression analysis. However, there was no significant difference between SLE patients with abnormal Pap smear n 19 ; and normal Pap smear n 71 ; with regard to clinical characteristic features of lupus. Dapsone was found to be significantly associated with higher cervical atypia in SLE p 0.000 ; while immunosuppressive agents were not. CONCLUSION: Patients with SLE are more prone to develop cervical atypia with HPV infections. Lupus itself appears to be a risk factor in the development of the condition. The clinical characteristic features of the disease, or treatment associated with the underlying disease have not been found to be the risk factors, except the use of dapsone may be associated with cervical atypia. Regular cervical smear screening is recommended in SLE patients. THROMBOEMBOLISM IN SOUTHERN CHINESE PATIENTS WITH SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS: A PROSPECTIVE STUDY Dr Tang Shuk Kuen, Sandy, Department of Medicine & Geriatrics, Princess Margaret Hospital December 2003 Rheumatology Exit Assessment Exercise ; Objectives To study the risk of thromboembolism and its predictive factors in a cohort of southern Chinese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus SLE, because reminyl canada. In October, the co-coordinators of the programme, Jars Balan and Andrij Makuch, gave well-attended talks at St. Vladimir's Institute as part of commemorations marking the centennial of Ukrainian settlement in Toronto. Whereas Mr. Balan spoke on the rich Ukrainian theatrical legacy of the city, Mr. Makuch gave a fascinating overview of some of the highlights of a century of Ukrainian life on the shores of Lake Ontario. More recently, Mr. Balan kicked off the 2001 Edmonton CIUS seminar series with a presentation entitled: "California Dreaming: Ahapii Honcharenko's Role in the Formation of a Pioneer Ukrainian Canadian Intelligentsia." His talk examined a short-lived commune established in 1902 on Honcharenko's Hayward, California ranch, by activists who figured prominently in the subsequent development of the pioneer era Ukrainian Canadian community. Currently, Mr. Balan is focussing his efforts on preparing a detailed chronology of Ukrainian theatrical performances in Canada during the interwar years. A paper which he recently completed on the connection between Vasyl Stefanyk's classic short story, "The Stone Cross", and an immigrant who homesteaded in 1898 near Chipman, Alberta, is soon to be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Ukrainian Studies. An article by Mr. Balan, on the Ukrainian churches of Western Canada, appeared in the JanuaryFebruary issue of the New York-based Catholic Near East magazine. In addition to these activities, the Ukrainian Canadian Programme has commissioned research toward the writing of the second instalment of the three-volume CIUS history of Ukrainians in Canada. Accomplishments and Failures of Ukraine Discussed at CIUS-Sponsored Round Table Anniversary dates provide opportunities for both celebration and reflection. Although a young state, Ukraine reached a milestone this year when it marked the tenth anniversary of its independence. On December 3 the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies sponsored a round table discussion entitled "Ten Years after Independence: Quo Vadis, Ukraine?" Panel participants included well-known scholars on contemporary Ukraine: Dr. Taras Kuzio, Research Associate at the Centre for International and Security Studies, York University; Dr. David Marples, Professor of History at the University of Alberta and Director of the Stasiuk Programme for the Study of Contemporary Ukraine at CIUS; and Dr. Roman Solchanyk, Consultant at the Rand Corporation. The panel moderator was Dr. Zenon Kohut, Director of CIUS. The December 3 panel on contemporary Ukraine was organized as part of series of special events celebrating the tenth year of Ukraine's independence and the 25th anniversary of CIUS. Study on Most Recent Wave of Ukrainian Immigration to Canada Professor Wswolod Isajiw, a prominent Ukrainian-Canadian sociologist, recently revealed some preliminary findings from a ground-breaking study of the latest wave of Ukrainian immigrants to Canada. Speaking at the University of Toronto on 28 January 2002 at a seminar co-sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies and the Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Ukraine, Professor Isajiw addressed the question of Fourth Wave Immigrants from Ukraine, 1991-2001: Results of a New Study.'.
