PrecoseINTERNET RHEUMATOLOGY INFORMATION SEARCH: A STUDY OF WEBSITES LISTED ON COMMON SEARCH ENGINES Gregory Choy University of Toronto ; Background: The internet has become an increasing important portal of medical information. Many rheumatology patients have turned to internet sites for more information about both the diagnoses and therapies. The authors of these websites range from respected academic institutions to sellers of unregulated health supplements. Objectives: To explore the internet through popular search engines used by lay person and to examine the source of information on websites discussing rheumatologic conditions and therapies Methods: A single investigator searched the internet with 4 popular search engines Yahoo, Google, AOL, and MSN ; with search terms pertaining to 6 common rheumatologic conditions arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, gout ; and 2 commonly used medications steroid, methotrexate ; . Total number of sites found and number of sponsored links were recorded with each search. The top 10 links were visited to determine whether the sites are provided by academic institutions, non-profit patient groups, or commercial entities. Results: On average, top 10 links contained 41% academic sites, 18% non-profit patient sites and 41% commercial sites. The average number of total links found is greatest with the term "arthritis" 882215 ; and Yahoo as the engine 729778 ; . Among the 4 search engines, MSN found the highest percentage of commercial sites 58% ; and the largest average number of sponsored links 6.6 while Google and AOL found the highest percentage of academic sites 48% ; . Among various search terms, "fibromyalgia" yielded the highest percentage of commercial sites 45% "arthritis" yielded the highest percentage of non-profit patient sites; whereas "osteoarthritis", "systemic lupus erythematosus" and "gout" tied in yielding the highest percentage of academic sites 53% ; . The National Institute of Health is the most common provider of information, as its websites were on the top 10 of all 4 search engines for all search terms except "steroid". Conclusion: Copious account of medical information is readily available to a lay person on the internet. Commercial sites rivals academic institutions in overall exposure, with patient non-profit groups far behind. However, there is a wide variation depending on the search terms and engine used. 4-6 hours after the morning dosage. Correct therapeutic ranges after treatment is begun should be at the top 1 3 to 25% above the upper limits of the lab reference ranges except for geriatric dogs where mid-range is adequate ; . Dosage should be adjusted accordingly to achieve optimum therapeutic range. Thyroid hormones should always be given twice daily to obtain the best response. It is now known that the half-life of T4 in the dog is about 10-12 hours much shorter than in humans ; .3 Thus, about half of the hormone is used and eliminated from the body within 12 hours, so twice daily dosing provides the most consistent results. Dogs on thyroid therapy should be monitored with complete panels on a regular basis every 6-12 months ; .3 Once the long term dosage is determined, the medicine can be purchased in bulk quantities 250-1000 pills ; to make maintenance more cost effective. Once therapy is started the dog will need to be on treatment for the rest of its life. Ironically the initial thyroid test on Brooke was not a low as you'd have expected in a dog that symptomatic. It was somewhere just below the test normal range. GRR decided we had nothing to lose by trying thyroid medication.and the results were far beyond what we hoped for. Within six weeks Brooke was bounding through the yard happily chasing balls with her foster family. The crankiness went away, her coat and attitude improved, muscle function began to rebuild in her hips and those eyes were brighter than ever. Today, at 6, she romps on the beach and has a wonderful life with her loving Dad, for instance, insulin.L ejaculation precoseIf you are taking precose along with other diabetes medications, be sure to have some source of glucose available in case you experience any symptoms of mild or moderate low blood sugar and acetylsalicylic. Many of inflammation, other and inflammation, medical arthritis, many of other types certain and treats problems. Because precose does not enhance insulin secretion, but acts as a carbohydrate absorption inhibitor, the drug poses different risks than sulfonylureas and salbutamol. Precose problemsRadioautography.--After the 1st and 2nd wk of antibiotic therapy, there were no significant differences in intestinal cell proliferation between the experimental and the control groups. Cell counts done 24 hr after the injection of labeled thymidine in animals on the antibiotic regimen for 3, 4, and 5 wk revealed a significant increase in the height of labeled cells Table I I I that is, more epithelial cells were labeled in the villi of the antibiotic-treated group 35.0 b 7.0 to 23.8 + 4.3 in controls, Fig. 1 ; . When the results were separated by the animals' sex, it was observed that the treated males had a greater number of cells labeled than the treated females 37.9 4- 9.8 to 32.1 : t 1.8 ; , and likewise each group had more than their corresponding controls 24.2 -4- 6.0 and 23.4 -42.8 respectively ; . There was a greater variance, however, in the number of labeled cells in the males Fig. 2 ; . A smaller increase in the total number of epithelial cells in the villi of the antibiotic-treated animals was present compared to the controls 63.8 -4- 3.4 to 57.6 4- 5.5 ; . Therefore, the per cent of labeled cells number over the total cells ; was greater for the antibiotic group 3-5 wk after therapy than for the controls 55.4 4- 13.9 to 41.5 -4- 6.9 ; Figs. 3 and 5 and calciferol. For the principal patent, they usually will say, "Well, that patent has expired." There are a lot of subsidiary patents that I just described, and generic manufacturers will say, "That's not valid, " or "That applies to something else, " and so our drug should be approved. But the patent owner can file a patent infringement lawsuit, and that triggers an automatic 30-month delay in FDA approval for the generic drug, unless a court rules otherwise. But the court cases tend to drag on much more longer than two and a half years; so regardless of the merits of the brand drug maker's case, they can win an extra two and a half years of protection that way. If that fails, they also can file citizen petitions raising safety questions about the generic drug. The FDA turns down about 80 percent of those petitions, but they can still cause delays in approving the generic drug. Again, the brand drug manufacturers are trying to protect their intellectual property. All they can be accused of is being very, very aggressive about it. And, in my personal opinion, they've stepped over the line. I mean, they are doing what they're supposed to do. They're trying to promote their products. They're trying to make a good return for the shareholders. I think the rules need to be changed a little bit. Generics Getting Flattened. The result of all of these efforts by the brand drug manufacturers is that generic drug penetration has flattened out over the past few years. If you look at 1997 versus 2000, the first three bars are for those under 65, the next three bars are for those over 65 in 1997 Chart 7 ; . Then you look at the corresponding numbers, and there's a percentage of drug spending that's spent on generics. These corresponding numbers for 2000 are almost uniformly lower than the numbers for 1997. So the lives of the generic drugs in terms of market share have stalled. That's a big part of the cause of the failure to contain the cost. If you can't move enough people to generics, then you're going to have big bills for expensive brand-name drugs. Developing New Drugs. A couple of other causes worth mentioning. First, the cost of developing a new drug is on the rise. It used to be that pharmaceutical companies said it cost about $500 million to do all the research and testing for a new drug. Somebody did a study last fall that said actually the figure has now risen to $800 millio n. However, some critics of the industry say if you account for it properly, including accounting for work done in government laboratories, it's actually much less. So there's some debate about that and amiodarone and precose, because precoce. The massachusetts general study, funded by a stanley foundation grant, was reported in european neuropsychopharmacology in february 200 what this study shows is that every child with add, bipolar or any other mood disorder should be on omegabrite, said dr. No one likes to stay on medication any longer than they have to, but if you stop taking your medicine too soon, it could interfere with your recovery and progress and cordarone.
